My mom introduced me to eastern wisdom traditions and Thay. It has been a foundational aspect of my life, philosophy and world view, even though I fall short often. The overlaps between Buddhism and stoicism has made it easy for me to intellectually grasp, although I will always be a work in progress. Thank you for a beautiful post.

Thank you for this terrific essay, and for highlighting the teachings of this underappreciated spiritual leader… I was intrigued by the way you found eudaimonia at the root of the positive emotions , and appreciated your extensive analysis of his short masterpiece… Thay’s work may be the perfect complement to Stoic writings and adaptable to almost any spiritual worldview

Thank you, Tim! Yes, I find Thay’s work very nondogmatic—he’s just trying to reach people where they are and help lift them up. I think you will also like next week’s post on wabi sabi, where I’m looking at the intersection between Eastern art and Stoicism. There is so much to explore!
