Great post, and very timely for me...I've been lurking on Stacks written by some in the very modern philosophical communities, whose decisions and actions are determined, supposedly, by algorithms! It's all very perplexing to a 'bear of very little brain.' To me one of the great merits of virtue ethics is that you don't need a PhD in philosophy to understand or attempt to practice it.
Thanks, Judy! I agree, much contemporary philosophy is divorced from real life, which is why so many of us are turning to ancient philosophy for wisdom. I don't think today's philosophy is really concerned with wisdom at all. Living well (and living ethically) doesn't require a PhD and it doesn't revolve around the minutia of technical argumentation. Shouldn't philosophy aim to enlarge our spirit and perspective rather than shrinking it? Anyway, glad you enjoyed this post!
Dear Brittany, what a great piece. Thanks for the inspiration. I really liked the thinking behind your piece! Thanks a lot.
Thanks Alexander, I'm really enjoying your new book as well!
