This week we’re taking a short break from our exploration of Chris Gill’s new book, Learning to Live Naturally: Stoic Ethics and Its Modern Significance. We’ll return to it next week with an in-depth look at Stoic development.
For today, I’d like to share some of my recent talks and interviews, as well as an exciting upcoming event and some book recommendations.

On April 1 Modern Stoicism is hosting the North American Stoic Summit 2023 in Tampa, Florida! This will be an all-day event of practical Stoicism featuring 21st-century Stoic luminaries such as William Irvine, Ward Farnsworth, Karen Duffy, and more. It’s all taking place at the beautiful Hotel Alba in downtown Tampa. I’m co-organizing and co-hosting the event, and I can tell you it’s going to be a wonderful in-person get-together.
The deadline for purchasing tickets is March 24, but the deadline for getting our group hotel rate is March 13 (recently extended). Be sure to get your tickets soon!
Book Recommendations
A few good books I am currently reading or have recently read:
The Other Enlightenment: Self-Estrangement, Race, and Gender by Matthew Sharpe - This brand new book presents a compelling case that self-estrangement was one of the keys to the greatest accomplishments of the Enlightenment. Fearlessly bold in his attempt to correct an oversight in current scholarship, Matt Sharpe shows how the Enlightenment—properly understood—provides an “ethics of inquiry” that is still as relevant as ever.
The Map of Knowledge: A Thousand-Year History of How Classical Ideas Were Lost and Found by Violet Moller - It might sound strange to say that a history of ideas is a page turner, but it is! Extremely well-written and well-documented, The Map of Knowledge will take you on a tour of the intellectual hubs of the past: Alexandria, Baghdad, Cordoba, Venice, and more.
Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness by Peter Godfrey-Smith - A sympathetic look at some intriguing animals, with fascinating implications for understanding ourselves. Whether or not you’re a fan of cephalopods, this book will make you think carefully about your own consciousness and your relationship to other creatures.
