Yes re Sicily! Agrigento was amazing, as was climbing Etna - as, of course, Seneca, always keen to learn about natural phenomena, urged Lucilius to do: 'If you will write me a full account of these matters, I shall then have the boldness to ask you to perform another task,—also to climb Aetna at my special request. Certain naturalists have inferred that the mountain is wasting away and gradually settling, because sailors used to be able to see it from a greater distance. The reason for this may be, not that the height of the mountain is decreasing, but because the flames have become dim and the eruptions less strong and less copious, and because for the same reason the smoke also is less active by day...' (Letter 79.2)

I'm headed to Sicily in September l and am looking forward to it Thanks for the suggestions. Anything else you loved/would suggest as a must-do for a first-time visitor? Also, I like to read fiction books set in and nonfiction books based on places I'm visiting before/during. Anything in that category for you from Sicily?

Nice! I’m sure it will be a good trip. We didn’t go to Palermo or the northwest side, but I’ve heard there are beautiful places there too. If you’d like specific restaurants and Airbnbs, I can send you recommendations via message. For books, there’s The Leopard, the classic Sicilian novel.

Probably the most accessible text discussing this is Stoic Ethics: The Basics, my book with Chris Gill. If you want to go directly to the ancient texts, I recommend The Stoics Reader: Selected Writings and Testimonia.
