Thanks for stopping by! I’m Brittany Polat, the creator of Stoicism for Humans. I’m a lover of wisdom, but I’m not a typical philosopher.
As a philosophical writer, community organizer, and nonprofit founder, I help make the timeless wisdom of Stoicism available to people from many different backgrounds. My PhD is in applied linguistics, but ever since discovering Stoic philosophy a decade ago I have been writing books, organizing events, speaking at conferences, and contributing to the modern conversation on Stoicism. Here’s a selection of my work:
Stoic Ethics: The Basics - in collaboration with Chris Gill (available September 2024)
Tranquility Parenting: A Guide to Staying Calm, Mindful, and Engaged
Stoicare – cofounded in 2021 with Eve Riches
Modern Stoicism – steering committee member
The Stoic Fellowship – board member emerita
Stoa meditation app – check out my meditation series Deeper Connections
At Stoicism for Humans, I offer my thoughts on a broad range of philosophical topics related to living a good life, including:
Ethics
Nature
Human nature
Evolutionary psychology
Beauty
Art and literature
History and social issues
Family and friendship
Love and emotion
Strategies for mental wellbeing
For those new to Stoicism, or simply curious about the philosophy, I present practical information that you can immediately apply to your life. For seasoned Stoic practitioners, my goal is to both broaden and deepen our collective conversation about contemporary Stoicism. Through book reviews, essays, and occasionally even fiction, we’ll touch on the myriad ways philosophy can help us live meaningful lives.
